Nearly half of all Americans believe that hard work isn’t key to financial success

new study released by Rasmussen Reports found that nearly half of the country believe that hard work and determination is not the key factor behind economic success in America today.

The poll found that only 52 percent of Americans believe that hard work is the key to getting rich in American society today. Nearly one in ten respondents said that pure luck made people rich and successful, while another 28 percent attributed economic success to those who inherit money from others.

These results echo the sentiments made by President Barack Obama during the campaign last year when he declared that others, including the government, were responsible for making Americans successful and rich, and not hard work and determination, during a campaign stop in Roanoke, Virginia last summer.

“If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help….If you’ve got a business — you didn’t build that.  Somebody else made that happen,” Obama told supporters at the rally.

The Romney campaign quickly jumped on this misstep and released a web video criticizing Obama for this misstep. Unfortunately Politifact, a website operated by the Tampa Bay Times, came to the president’s defense when it declared Romney’s criticism of the comment as one of its “Lies of the Year” last month.

It’s a sad day in our country when approximately half of our fellow Americans think that something else besides hard work leads to financial success.

Rasmussen’s survey of 1,000 likely voters was conducted on January 17th-18th, 2013 with a three percentage point margin of error.
