It’s a well-known fact that stars like to wear risqué outfits to the Grammys. After all, it is the show to which in 2000 Jennifer Lopez wore the infamous green see-through wrap dress, and that Lil’ Kim wore pasties to the previous year.
This year, however, the network airing the country’s most prominent music awards show – CBS – is attempting to crack down on how controversial the outfits worn on the red carpet can be.
Earlier this week the network distributed the following “wardrobe advisory” to nominees and presenters filled with guidance for proper dress for Sunday’s show:

CBS Program Practices advises that all talent appearing on camera please adhere to Network policy concerning wardrobe.
Please be sure that buttocks and female breasts are adequately covered. Thong type costumes are problematic. Please avoid exposing bare fleshy under curves of the buttocks and buttock crack. Bare sides or under curvature of the breasts is also problematic. Please avoid sheer see-through clothing that could possibly expose female breast nipples. Please be sure the genital region is adequately covered so that there is no visible “puffy” bare skin exposure. Please avoid commercial identification of actual brand name products on T-shirts. Foreign language on wardrobe will need to be cleared. OBSCENITY OR PARTIALLY SEEN OBSCENITY ON WARDROBE IS UNACCEPTABLE FOR BROADCAST. This as well, pertains to audience members that appear on camera. Finally, The Network requests that any organized cause visibly spelled out on talent’s wardrobe be avoided. This would include lapel pins or any other form of accessory.
That doesn’t mean that the celebrities can’t be creative with their outfit choices. The network sent out a similar memo last year, yet Fergie was able to get away with an orange see-through jumpsuit covering only a black bra and underwear designed by Jean Paul Gaultier.
The memo was issued just two days after questions were raised about Beyoncé’s outfit during her Super Bowl performance on February 3rd. Rachel Campos- Duffy, a former reality TV star and the wife of Wisconsin Congressman Sean Duffy, publicly stated that Beyoncé’s outfit made her look like a stripper. Designs of the outfit released by the designer, Rubin Singer, show that the original design was even more racy than what she ultimately wore.
CBS also sponsored a commercial for its hit show “2 Broke Girls” during the Super Bowl where the show’s two leads, Kat Dennings and Beth Behrs, dance provocatively on a stripper pole. The commercial was so racy that is cost a staffer for Idaho Congressman Raul Labrador his job after he accidentally tweeted about it from his boss’s official account Sunday night.
If CBS wants starts to get serious about covering up, perhaps it should set a better example with its own programming.
