Looking for a new Bushmaster AR-15 rifle to add to your gun collection? One Texas congressman wants to help you out.
Hoping to arm Americans with “the gun Obama doesn’t want you to have,” Rep. Steve Stockman (R-Texas) launched a contest on his campaign site to give away an assault weapon to one lucky person. The winner will be announced, fittingly, on July 4.
Stockman first announced the contest from his Twitter account, @ReElectStockman, on Wednesday.
“Enter the drawing to win a FREE Bushmaster AR-15 rifle, almost impossible to find in stores and the number one firearm on the gun banners’ wish list!” Stockman’s campaign posted on the contest signup page. The lucky person doesn’t have to necessary donate to the congressman’s 2014 reelection bid, but he or she must be a U.S. resident 18 years or older and meet all legal requirements to obtain a gun in the U.S., including submitting to a background check at a licensed firearms dealer. He or she must also submit their name, email address and zip code to the campaign – which can then be used to build Stockman’s campaign email list for 2014.
Naturally, Democrats are up in arms over the contest. Democratic National Committee Communications Director Brad Woodhouse replied via tweet to Stockman Wednesday, pointing out that the particular rifle he was raffling off was the same model that Adam Lanza used during the Sandy Hook shooting in December.
“Here in the congressional office the response has been overwhelmingly positive,” Stockman spokesman Donny Ferguson told the Washington Times. “What Democrats have called in have been universally violent and mentally unstable. … There is nothing more psychotic and violent than an anti-gun activist. But people across the country love the idea and support the civil right to keep and bear arms.”
Stockman, who returned to Washington in January after serving two terms in the mid-1990s, has been on a media roll of late. Earlier this week he made headlines for sending out a series of tweets criticizing the mainstream mediafor their lack of coverage on the Gosnell trial and Benghazi hearings. He also sparked controversy for taking singer Ted Nugent to the State of the Union as his guest in February, and for setting up an “Obama failometer” outside his Washington office earlier this year.
