One Boston man got a few unexpected phone calls Tuesday night, when Vice President Joe Biden accidentally called his phone looking to congratulate newly elected Boston Mayor Martin Walsh on his win.
Martin Walsh, a former staffer for the late Sen. Ted Kennedy and president of a Boston-based government-relations firm, was sitting at home watching the election returns come in with his wife when the phone started ringing.
“It was a nice surprise and the vice president has a great sense of humor,” the less-famous Walsh told CBS News, adding that even his wife thought it was hilarious that so many people were calling him by accident.
Plus, one would have to appreciate humor after getting a phone call from the gaffe-prone Biden, as the former Delaware senator exclaimed “You son of a gun! You did it!” when Walsh answered. Walsh also reported receiving phone calls from Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak and Florida Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, the vice chairman and chairman of the Democratic National Committee, respectively.
Walsh, who anticipates having many more calls for the Mayor-elect come his way, even offered to help Biden track down the number of the correct Walsh. By the end of the night Biden was able to leave a voice mail for the correct Walsh.
“We’re a dime a dozen in Boston,” he said, according to The Boston Globe. “I probably know eight Marty Walshes.”
Several politicians, including President Barack Obama and outgoing Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, did manage to get through to the correct Martin, however, who was at his victory party at the Park Plaza Hotel at the time.
