Have you heard of the “Teapublican Party”? We hadn’t, either, but that hasn’t stopped them from winning the Daily Kos’
prestigious “Racist of the Year” award for 2013.
The “Teapublican Party,” which the progressive website defines as “the extremist tea party wing of the Republican Party who are currently holding the government and citizens of the United States hostage with threats of economic terrorism,” took home the top honors Sunday with 23 percent of the nearly 10,000 votes cast online, followed by conservative talk radio host Rush Limbaugh (19 percent) and Fox News (17 percent).
“Teapublicans are equal opportunity haters. They, and those who fund them—like the Koch Brothers—are truly an American Taliban, and just like the KKK unleashed a reign of terror in the U.S. during reconstruction and into the civil rights era, the teahadists among us and those they elect to office are as much or more of a terrorist threat to our nation than any outside forces,” Daily Kos’ Denise Oliver Velezwrote on the site Sunday.
For winning the dubious honor, the “Teapublican Party” earned itself an online “Hoodie Award” resembling those worn by the Ku Klux Klan. “Their hoods may not be visible, but their vileness can be seen clearly by everyone who is fighting to build a country free of racism,” the page says.
Other potential “Racist of the Year” candidates included country singer Brad Paisley, Washington Redskins owner Daniel Snyder, Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Rand Paul (R-Ky.), and “Duck Dynasty’s” Phil Robertson.
